citalopram HBr

Seropram is widely used in managing depression. The drug is also used in individuals with anxiety disorders, panic disorders and obsessive compulsive disorders.

Falling under anti depressant drugs, it affects chemical transmitters in the brain called neurotransmitters. The neurotransmitters are manufactured as well as released by the nerves. They attach to the adjacent nerves thereby modifying their activities. Basically, neurotransmitters are the communication channels in the brain. It is believed that depression is caused by imbalance in the neurotransmitters. Seropram hinders the uptake of serotonin 9one of the neurotransmitter) by the nerve cells once it is released. The uptake mechanism is important in removing the released neurotransmitters as well as ending their activity on the adjacent nerves. Once Seropram reduces the uptake the result is a freer serotonin in one’s brain which stimulates the nerve cells.

Seropram is classified in the category of drugs known as selective serotonin re-uptake inhibitors (SSRIs) which also contains sertraline (Zoloft), Fluoxetine (Prozac) and Paroxetine (Paxil).

Seropram Effective dosage

Seropram is taken once a day mostly in the morning. Like all antidepressants, Seropram takes a number of weeks before the maximum effects can be seen. In most cases, the doses are gradually adjusted upwards until the appropriate dose is reached. Debilitated persons, elderly patients, and individuals with particular liver and kidney diseases may require lower doses.

Seropram Side effects

You should not take any SSRI with any antidepressant in the class of MAO inhibitors. Some of the most common side effects that come with citalopram include vomiting, nausea, sleeping disorders, tremors and shaking, headaches, and excessive sweating. In some cases, patients undergo withdrawal reactions in case they stop taking some SSRIs. Some of the withdrawal symptoms include tingling sensation, poor mood, irritability, vivid dreams, tiredness, and dizziness.

SSRIs can also cause worsening of depression an in some cases result in suicide in rare cases. It is a bit herculean to evaluate the likely side effects in the depressed patients since the condition may continue with treatment or otherwise. In any case, suicide itself results from depression. It is important to monitor patients taking SSRIs for worsening suicidal tendencies and depression.
