What is Seretide?

Seretide is a drug that is made up of salmeterol and fluticasone. Fluticasone belongs to the broad class of medications that are known as steroids. It has anti inflammatory effects and so it reduces and prevents inflammation. Salmeterol belongs to the broad class of medications that are referred to as bronchodilators. It is a muscle relaxant and so it works by causing relaxation of respiratory airways and thus improves the breathing.

PRESENTATION: The medication is available in the form of Seretide disk which is available with special inhaler device that is already loaded with blister packs which contain salmeterol and fluticasone in doses that are measured. Every time you make use of the inhaler, the device will open and load a blister. It is important to note that the Seretide disk is not intended to be used with the spacer.

Seretide combines the double action of fluticasone and salmeterol and it is used in the prevention of attacks by asthma. It is also used in the prevention of the worsening or flare-ups of COPD (Chronic Obstructive Pulmonary Disease) that is associated with emphysema and/or chronic bronchitis. Your doctor can also prescribe the medication for other ailments apart from or in addition to the already stated.

Tips, warnings, and guide on the use of Seretide Disk

Seretide should not be used for the treatment of active asthma. If you are already under asthma attack, Seretide may not help in bringing the desired quick relief. At the time of asthma attack you should look for the fast acting inhaler to open up your respiratory air ways and help resume the normal breathing.

Before using this medication, inform your doctor about your existing conditions like:

  • allergies to food or drugs,
  • seizure disorders,
  • immune system disturbances,
  • osteoporosis,
  • high blood pressure,
  • heart diseases,
  • liver diseases,
  • any infection
  • glaucoma,
  • thyroid disorder,
  • diabetes, or any other pre existing health condition that you might have,
  • medications that you might be taking and especially:
    • amiodarone (Cordarone)
    • a diuretic (water pill)
    • HIV anti retroviral medicines
    • MAO inhibitors
    • Antidepressants
    • antibiotics
    • beta-blockers

This list of the medications or preexisting that can adversely react with the Seretide is not conclusive. Just inform the doctor of any medication including herbal products, mineral and food supplements that you might be taking. Also inform the doctor about any pre existing health condition that you might have.

After taking this medication, call your doctor immediately if the symptoms get worse. If you do not experience any relief ensure that you inform your doctor.

WARNING: Salmeterol has showed to cause increase in the cases of deaths related to asthma. Because of this, ensure that you take only the prescribed dosages of Seretide and follow all the instructions very carefully.

Do not take this medication if you known that you develop allergic reaction to salmeterol or fluticasone. Fluticasone is mostly sold by the names Flovent or Flonase. Salmeterol is sold under the brand name Serevent.

Seretide can cause harm to the unborn fetus. If you are at the moment pregnant or you have plans of becoming pregnant soon you should consult and inform the doctor before you begin taking the medication. Although it is not clearly known whether Seretide can pass in to the breast milk or whether it can harm the suckling baby, if you are a nursing mother do not use it without first consulting a doctor.

Seretide can have serious negative effects on the growth and development of children. If you suspect any abnormal development in the growth of your baby that is taking this medication, consult a doctor immediately.

As stated earlier, this medication contains Fluticasone which belongs to the broad class of medications that are known as steroids. All steroids have a side effect of causing addiction and dependence if taken for continuous along time. In that state of addiction and dependence, the patient will experience withdrawal symptoms if it stops taking the medication all over sudden. If you have for some time been using Seretide or you experience some unpleasant feelings if you reduce, delay or stop taking its usual dosage, seek help from your doctor or other medical professional that has expertise of prescription abuse treatment.

The use of steroids for long period of time can lead to loss of bones otherwise known as osteoporosis. The osteoporosis risk becomes more likely while taking Seretide if:

  • you lack enough quantities of vitamin D in the body,
  • you come from family in which there is history of osteoporosis,
  • you do not engage in exercises,
  • you smoke, or
  • your diet does not contain enough calcium

Ensure that you take the Seretide as recommended and advised by the doctor. Do not take less or more than the recommended dosage. Ensure that you read the patient’s instructions and follow them very strictly. If you do not understand or if anything is not clear from the patient’s instructions, ensure that you consult your pharmacist.

If this medication does not cause the desired relief or prevention of asthma attacks, ensure that you call your doctor immediately. Those who use peak flow meter should also consult a doctor immediately if the numbers fall below the normal levels.

Asthma is a health condition that cannot be cured but can be prevented and even treated by the administration of different drugs either concurrently or simultaneously. For the best treatment of asthma, ensure that you properly use all the medications that are recommended by your doctor for treating, preventing or relieving them. Do not change the medication or recommended dosages of any other medications without first informing your doctor.

Seretide should be stored at room temperature at a place far from heat and moisture. If you forget taking a dosage do not take twice the dosage. Take the missed dosage as soon as you remember. If you remember the missed dose at almost the time of taking the next dose, skip that missed dose and then take the next dose at its scheduled time.

In case of over dosage, seek very quick and emergency help. The symptoms of over dosage include:

  • chest pain,
  • weakness,
  • vomiting
  • nausea
  • tremor,
  • irregular heart beat,
  • headache,
  • weakness, etc

WHEN USING SERETIDE AVOID:

  • Using any salmeterol second form ( e.g. Serevent) or using similarly inhaled bronchodilators like formoterol ( Foradil) without the consultation and express advice by your doctor
  • Living close to or being in contact with people suffering from communicable diseases like measles and chicken pox. This is so because Seretide can lower your body immunity capabilities. Once you have been exposed to any diseases, call your doctor for the quick administration of appropriate preventive treatment.

Seretide Side Effects

Like most other medications, Seretide has side affects even when it is taken as recommended and advised by the doctor these side effects include:

  • allergic reactions like hives, rash, itching, etc
  • breathing difficulties
  • swelling face, tongue, lips, or any other part of the body
  • wheezing
  • chest tightness
  • abnormal heart beats
  • restlessness
  • tremor
  • fever
  • chills
  • chest pain
  • cough
  • blurred vision
  • eye pain
  • worsening of the asthma symptoms
  • headache
  • dizziness
  • nausea
  • vomiting
  • diarrhea
  • dry mouth
  • dry nose
  • dry throat
  • stuffy nose
  • sinus pain
  • cough
  • sore throat
  • hoarseness
  • deepened voice, etc.

If these symptoms are mild than those side effects are normal. If the side effects are very severe that is abnormal and you should seek quick medical help from your doctor.
