What is Reductil?

Reductil is a drug that is used for the treatment of unprecedented weight gain (obesity). The intake of the drug should be accompanied by the reduction of the high calories diet for the best results. Reductil is an aid for the weight loss diet.

How does Reductil Work?

It works by the regulation of the chemicals that influence the appetite patterns in the brain in order to cause temporal reduction of the feeling of hunger and craving for the food.

Who should take Reductil?

If you are obese and if the following exceptions do not apply to you, you can take the drug.

You should NOT take Reductil:

  • If you have history of allergy to any of the active components and ingredients of Reductil
  • If you are suffering from any of the eating disorders like anorexia and bulimia.
  • If you suffer from High Blood pressure, atherosclerosis/ Arteriosclerosis (hardening of arteries), pulmonary hypertension (elevated levels of blood pressure in the lungs)
  • If you have ever suffered from stroke
  • If you suffer from kidney or liver problems
  • If you have even undergone dialysis because of problems of the kidney
  • If you are taking any of the medications that are known as Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor. An example of these medications is the fluoxetine
  • If you are taking appetite suppressants
  • If in the preceding 14 days you have taken MAO (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor) inhibitor. An example of MAO inhibitor is the phenelzine

If any of the above stated conditions applies to you, you should ensure that you consult a doctor for advice before you begin using Reductil.

Precautions before taking Reductil

Not all the people that are obese should take Reductil. Some medical conditions may interact with the drug causing health complications. You should inform the pharmacist or any other prescriber of any preexisting medical conditions.

You should especially consult and inform the prescriber:

  • If you are at the moment pregnant, you expect to become pregnant soon or if you are breast feeding.
  • If you are taking any other medication whether it is prescription or non prescription. Some herbal medications and dietary supplements may also not be recommended if you are taking Reductil.
  • If you are allergic to the common medications, some foods or other substances.
  • If you have any problems of the heart, liver, blood clotting, seizures and eye conditions like the narrow-angle glaucoma.

Some other medicines may adversely interact with Reductil. You should inform the prescriber if you are taking any of the following medicines:

  • Tryptophan,
  • Cyclosporine,
  • Selective Serotonin Reuptake Inhibitor (eg, fluoxetine),
  • Imidazoles (eg, ketoconazole, itraconazole,),
  • MAO (Monoamine Oxidase Inhibitor) inhibitors (eg, phenelzine),
  • Dihydroergotamine,
  • lithium,
  • narcotic analgesics (eg, codeine),
  • sumatriptan, etc

These medicines and many others not in the above list may increase the side effects of Reductil. The side effects include sweating, restlessness, twitching, fever and seizures (these may in some rate cases be life threatening).

NOTE that the list of the drugs that may interact with Reductil and the side effects that may be aggravated by the interaction of Reductil with the other drugs is not conclusive.

Ensure that you seek professional advice from the health care provider on whether Reductil may interfere with the drugs that you might be taking. Ensure that you also consult the health care provider before begin, stop or change the dosage of any medication.

How should you take Reductil?

Reductil should strictly be taken as advised by the doctor. Even though the Reductil packaging contains dosing instructions, your doctor may adjust and modify your dosing depending on your health conditions.

Every Reductil packaging contains a detailed patient leaflet. This leaflet has very vital information that you must read and understand. It will inform you about the possible side effects, dosing, warnings, how to take the drug, etc. Read the leaflet very carefully and if you have any questions ensure that you ask your pharmacist for clarification.

Take the medication orally by mouth. The drug can be taken with or without food.

Unless otherwise advised by the doctor, Reductil should be taken in the morning. This is to because the drug may cause lack of sleep and other sleeping problems if it is taken at the evening hours.

If you forget to take the Reductil dose as advised skip that missed dose and then take the subsequent dose at its appropriate time. NEVER take twice the prescribed dosage to replace that missed dose.

Further vital information about Reductil

Reductil can cause dizziness. The effects are worse when the drug is taken at the same time or concurrently with some certain medications or alcohol.

The drug should be used with a lot of caution; do not engage in activities which need serious concentration like driving or operating of machinery after taking Reductil.

Avoid the intake of alcohol or other medications that may cause drowsiness. These medications to avoid include for example the muscle relaxers and the sleep aids. Seek the advice from the pharmacist on whether the medications that you are currently taking may cause drowsiness.

Reductil is a means to an end but not an end it itself. The drug will work best if you combine its intake with change in your dietary habits and living styles. It will work best if you exercise and take less fatty and low calorie diets.

If you want to maintain ideal body weight you should entrench the practice the exercising and intake of less fatty/ low calorie diets throughout your life. Ensure that you keenly follow the advice of your doctor or the diet counselor.

Your doctor may need to conduct some laboratory tests to check your blood pressure, pulse rate, weight loss and such related health issues while you are still taking Reductil. These tests are very important. Ensure that you keep the records of the results of the laboratory tests.

You can use the approved effective methods of birth control while still taking Reductil.

Reductil should only be taken by adults because its safety, effectiveness or otherwise in the adolescents and kids has not been evaluated.

The safety or otherwise of Reductil during pregnancy and breast feeding has not been evaluated. If you are pregnant or if you expect to become pregnant soon you should discuss with your doctor on the safety of the drug and its possible risks. It is especially not known whether the drug may be found in the mother’s breast milk. You should thus avoid breastfeeding if you are taking Reductil.

Reductil may cause addiction or dependence if it is taken consistently, for long time and in high doses. To avoid addiction and dependence, do not take any further Reductil dosages without consulting your health care provider after completion of the prescribed dosage.

What are the side effects of Reductil?

All the medications produce unwanted effects that are referred to as the side effects. The intensity, nature, type and severity of the symptoms vary from one person to another. Some people may indeed experience no side effects at all.

Most people that are taking Reductil present the following COMMON symptoms:

  • back pain
  • dizziness
  • flu-like symptoms
  • increase or decrease of appetite
  • indigestion
  • migraine
  • nausea
  • painful menstruation
  • sleeplessness
  • upset stomach
  • constipation
  • dry mouth
  • headache
  • increased cough
  • joint pain
  • nasal inflammation
  • nervousness sinus inflammation
  • sore throat
  • weakness

Reductil may rarely cause SEVERE side effects. Incase you experience any one or several of the following symptoms you should immediately consult your healthcare provider.

  • agitation
  • change in the urine amount
  • clumsiness
  • depression
  • disorientation
  • eye pain
  • alteration of heartbeat
  • hives
  • itching
  • unconsciousness
  • rash
  • seizures
  • shortness of breath
  • swelling of mouth, legs, tongue, ankles, face, lips, or the feet
  • chest tightness
  • unusual bruising
  • bleeding
  • vomiting
  • anxiety
  • chest pain
  • confusion
  • difficulty in breathing
  • excitement
  • fainting
  • high fever
  • increased sweating
  • dilation of the pupils
  • one-sided weakness
  • restlessness
  • shivering
  • stomach pain
  • tremors
  • vision problems
  • weakness

What should be done if Reductil is taken in overdose?

You should never take Reductil in high dosages. Any cases of Reductil over dosage should be by accident or mistake. If you happen to take Reductil in over dose by accident or mistake you should ensure that you contract your nearest poison control center or the nearest emergency room.

How and where should you store the Reductil at your home?

Reductil should be stored at the room temperature (77'F/25'C). It should most preferably be stored in a container that is tightly closed. Store it away from pets, children, moisture, heat and sunlight.
