Premig is a prescription drug that is meant to treat migraine pains.
Premig is composed of two active components: lysine acetylsalicylate and metoclopramide. Lysine acetylsalicylate is a form of acetylsalicylic acid also known as aspirin. It is a very strong pain killer. On the other hand, metoclopramide is medicine used for treating sickness.
Aspirin is a drug that is classified under non-steroidal anti-inflammatory drugs (NSAIDs). This drug executes it function by interfering with the secretion of cyclo-oxygenase in the body. Cyclo-oxygenase is a chemical that triggers secretion of chemicals in the human body like the prostaglandins that is produced when one gets injured, attacked by diseases that cause pain, inflammation and swelling. When aspirin blocks the release of prostaglandins, it relieves people off inflammation and pain. It is also an ideal drug for relieving migraines and headaches.
When one suffers from migraine attacks, sickness and vomiting are likely to be experienced. These symptoms can be dealt with easily by using metoclopramide. It speeds up the absorption of aspirin hence fast relief of headaches.
Metoclopramide is a substance that works by blocking dopamine receptors found in the part of the brain called chemoreceptor trigger zone (CTZ). This area is the one that sends messages to the vomiting centre of the brain which in return will deliver nerve messages to the gut that is responsible for causing vomiting. When it blocks dopamine receptors, metoclopramide burs the vomiting center from receiving messages therefore reducing chances of vomiting and nausea.
Metoclopramide is also known to act on the gut to enhance production of acetylcholine which is a chemical responsible for tightening the muscles at the entrance of the stomach. It also relaxes muscles at the exit of the stomach. This chemical will also boost the contraction rate of the stomach therefore enhances fast movement of food from the stomach to the intestines. This is a good way of reducing vomiting. It also relieves migraine pains as aspirin is passed to the small intestine where it is absorbed to relief headache quickly.
The use of aspirin together with metoclopramide can be the most effective way of relieving migraine pains. It is most effective when used immediately the pain is felt.
The use of Premig can have side effects. Once it is administered it can lead to drowsiness, tiredness, constipation, restlessness and diarrhea. If these symptoms are severe consult your doctor.
