Norgesic is a muscle relaxant that in the treatment of painful muscle conditions and injuries as well as for physical therapy and rest. The analgesic properties of Orphenadrine may be responsible for its actions in the body even though the exact mechanism by which it acts has not been established. The use of Norgesic is known to relax muscles that are tense but this does not mean that the medication should substitute exercise, rest, or any other prescribed treatments.

As a muscle relaxant, there are a number of medical ailments that the drug has been used to treat successfully. These include Parkinson’s disease, muscle injuries and tension in the skeletal muscles in the areas likely to cause muscle spasms. The manner in which Norgesic is able to reduce the muscle spasms is possibly by use of central action that is atropine- like upon the medulla or centers of the cerebral motors. The effects that the drug has on patients suffering skeletal muscle spasms is not clear at present but analgesic activity of the drug has been put forth as a likely reason. Antihistaminic action has been linked to Orphenadrine along with local anesthetic action and post- ganglionic anti- cholinergic effects. Orphenadrine is known to cause minimal CNS stimulation that is in contrast with diphenhydramine’s sedative effects.

How it is taken

Unless expressly directed by your doctor to do otherwise, Norgesic should be taken with 240 milliliters or 8 ounces of water. This is the equivalent of a full glass. From a minimum of 30 minutes after consuming the drug, you should avoid lying down. The recommended dosage of Norgesic for the adults is between 1 and 2 tablets taken 3-4 times every day at suitable intervals, although the common practice is to take one in the morning and one in the evening. The recommended dosage really depends on how you respond to therapy as well as your medical condition. It is very important to stick to the dosage and take the drug precisely in the manner prescribed without over or under consuming the drug. While overconsumption of the drug is not going to heal you faster, you will end up increasing the risk of serious side effects.

You are also advised never to take a double dose of this drug and in the event that you happen to miss out on any prescribed dosage that you were supposed to take before, you should consume that dosage as soon as you remember it, provided that it is not yet time for the next dose.

Norgesic Side effects

The side effects include headaches, stomach upsets, drowsiness, blurred vision, dizziness, drowsiness, dry mouth, light headedness, difficulties in urination and constipation.

In case you experience any of the more serious side effects of Norgesic medication, then you are advised to stop consuming the drug immediately and go for emergency medical treatment. The serious side effects of the drug are very fast or irregular heartbeats, confusions, hallucinations and allergies. The allergies may be characterized by swelling of the tongue, lips or face, closing of the throat and difficulties in breathing.
