thiocolchicoside

Thiocolchicoside (Muscoril) is a muscle relaxant that has got analgesic and anti- inflammatory properties. It is used medically to treat orthopedic, traumatological and rheumatologic disorders as well as to treat muscular spasms. Thiocolchicoside, also called TCC, is used in medicine because of its analgesic, inflammatory and muscle relaxing properties and in addition, the drug has been found to have interactions with the type A receptors of GABA (Gamma- amino butyric acid). The seeds of a plant called Colchicum Autumnale are the source from which the drug is normally extracted and it is considered a glucosude. The drug’s side effects are minimal and do not compare with its beneficial properties.

As stated before, TCC (Thiocolchicoside) is used in medicine mostly because of its analgesic, anti- inflammatory and muscle relaxant properties. The action of the Muscoril muscle relaxant is basically on the central nervous system. Since the muscles normally heal on their own, the drug plays no part in the healing of the muscles but only masks pain, thereby giving the body time for healing. The drug also works on the brain and is used to lower the ability of the brain to sense pain in order that the users of the Thiocolchicoside can relax. This is achieved by blocking the sensations of pain sent by the nerves from reaching your brain.

By composition, Thiocolchicoside is considered as a semi-synthetic compound that is derived from Colchicoside, which is a naturally occurring compound. The Colchicoside has effects of relaxation on the skeletal muscles and in addition displaces both [3H] strychnine binding and [3H] GABA, fact that indicates that the strychnine sensitive receptors interact with GABA.

In addition to the above uses, Thiocolchicoside is used in treating lumbago and muscular contractions since it is a myorelaxant.

How it is used

Consumption of Muscoril is supposed to start from a small scale moving upwards up to a limit of between twelve and sixteen milligrams everyday. The starting dosage of the drug is 8mg per day but even after upping the dosage taken daily, no single dose should be in excess of 8mg. Muscoril should not be consumed on an empty stomach. For severe or intense muscle cramps, the patients should be given 2 capsules, unless, of course, the physician recommends otherwise.

Muscoril Side effects

Like many other muscle relaxant, there are side effects that are associated with Muscoril. In the event that you are faced by any of these side effects or if they fail to go away, you are advised to inform your doctor as soon as possible. The side effects include vomiting, stomach upsets, dizziness, tingling sensations in the legs, feet, arms and hands, increased muscle spasms and dry mouth.
